Crab Spiders and Lady’s Slippers

Goldenrod Crab Spider on a Yellow Lady’s SlipperToday I went up the hill by the house to catch the Large-Flowered Bellworts which  I knew where almost done blooming there.

On the way back, I was surprised to find that the Yellow Lady’s Slippers are out–and even more surprised to see a Goldenrod Crab Spider perched on the bloom! My younger sister found the spider in a book, and we learned that they (the females) can change from yellow to white to pale green. They’ll sit on the flowe  with their front legs out, ready to grab any insect who’s fooled by the disguise.
